Cenotes in Tulum, Riviera Maya, México

February 25th, 2010

Millions of years ago, the peninsula of Yucatan, Mexico, was covered by the ocean.During the Ice Age, the level of the ocean sank, all reefs and marine life that lived over it died, and many of them became marine fossils. In this time rainfall filtered through the ground and flowing slowly towards the ocean it eventually carver out huge Systems of underground caves and tunnels.Once the system were farmed, rainfall would filter through the ground, dragging minerals of the Earth.Dripping down the vaults of the underground caves, this formed stalagtites and stalagmites that in time created amazingly beautiful rock formations. After the Ice Age the water lavel rose again and flooded the cave system with spectacular clear water, leaving them as they are today.

The cenote itself is part of a cave ceiling which collapsed creating a natural entrance to the underground Systems.

The Mayans called these sinkholes “Dznot“ (sacred well), thus the Spanish Word Cenote. The Dznot was considered to be an Entrance to their mysthical and spiritual underworld, as well as the Orly source of fresh in the jungle.

Playa Azul Tulum Hotel is close to many Cenotes, we will love to help you out to find them!

The Riviera Maya, land of one of the oldest and greatest ancient cultures, the Mayan culture, with archaeological zones such as Chichen-Itzá, Cobá, Ek Bala’am and Tulum, and the Caribbean Sea with its shore of white sand, is more and more a destination of choice for businesses, social groups or families for their conventions, reunions, or weddings.

The reasons are many; communication is easier and better every day, and it’s a destination with many options for cultural entertainment, exploration of nature, sports, and especially an environmental sensitivity that is an example of sustainability in Mexico.

On the Riviera Maya you will find the town of Tulum, with its white sand beaches, considered the best in Mexico.  On these beaches you’ll find small hotels and hardly any of the huge all-inclusive developments.  In these hotels there’s no overcrowding or huge dining rooms with piles of food that will go to waste.  Tulum hotels have their own construction style, developed by the owners who have tried to create an unique experience of privacy and relaxation that allows one to enjoy the natural and cultural beauty of the area.

Playa Azul Tulum Hotel adheres to this concept of privacy and tranquility and has created the perfect environment for social or family reunions or for a business of a certain size, with all the necessary services for an event of these characteristics.

In Playa Azul Tulum Hotel, there’s a restaurant with two stories right on the beach with unbelievable views that has the capacity to serve 50 to 150 people comfortably.

Playa Azul Tulum Hotel also has 16 spaces that can fit up to a total of 42 people, in rooms and cabañas for two, three, or four people, a spa, and a Sport Center where one can learn how to kiteboard, or go kayaking out on the water.

Playa Azul Tulum Hotel also has all the information possible to help you choose which activities might you interest you here in the Riviera Maya, like diving, visits to the Mayan ruins, or visits to natural reserves like Sian-Ka’an.

The deep blue sea has always been a mystery to us humans. Since time began we have always tried to explore and explain what lies beneath. Not knowing exactly what is down at the bottom of the sea is what calls divers from all over the world to Tulum on the Riviera Maya in Mexico.

Scuba-Diving is an excellent way to find out more about underwater life and all the secret treasures it is hiding. With creatures such as manta rays, eagle rays, turtles, dolphins and sharks at Tulum most of the year, you can never be sure who you might be swimming next to. The variety in this area never ceases to amaze its visitors.

The Yucatan Peninsula offers excellent diving opportunities on the Great Maya Barrier Reef. This reef stretches from the north end of the Yucatan Peninsula all the way down to the Belize coast and Honduras. Although Puerto Vallarta, Cancun and Cozumel are some of the more famous spots for scuba diving, Tulum is the perfect location for divers looking for a less hectic environment.

The peninsula is a great sponge where rivers flow under the earth, rivers of water as clear as anywhere else you’ve seen. Tulum is especially famous for its pyramid in front of beautiful beaches, crystal clear water perfect.

On the Yucatan peninsula, the cave system is effectively a giant underground river cutting straight through limestone. The cenotes – mysterious circular holes in the bedrock – were sacred sites to the ancient Maya, and are often surrounded by verdant jungle. They provide interesting dives, where thrill-seekers can swim through cloudy hydrogen sulphide layers and soar around eerie stalactites.

October is a great time to dive in Tulum. The sea is calm so you can reef dive most days. And with the variety of other dive sites available in the Peninsula, there is something to suit all levels of experience. With visibility usually in excess of 100 metres, beautiful light effects and geological formations such as stalactites and stalagmites, these are some of the best caverns for diving in the world and truly an experience not to be missed.

Scuba diving can be an unbelievable experience that will forever transform you. With the warm jade colour sea, relaxed Caribbean atmosphere and paradisiac beaches, Tulum is the perfect place for people who love to discover.

Kiteboarding in Tulum with Playa Azul Tulum Hotel and Morph Kiteboarding!!

September 29th, 2009

Playa Azul Tulum Hotel and Morph Kiteboarding are opening a new Kiteboarding school in the Playa Azul Tulum Hotel, with IKO certified teachers and new equipment that’s safe to use.  November 1, 2009 will be the grand opening – everyone is welcome to come try out this new sport!

Kitesurfing is an extreme sport, with a growing number of followers.  The sport is a pretty new thing.  It’s thought that it first burst onto the scene in the 80s, but not too many people were into it at first.  Since then, as more people have known about it, many surfers started kiteboarding.  Since 2000, the amount of kiteboarders has surpassed all expectations.

To get started kitesurfing, you would need a kite – the size varies according to the amount of drag you want to have.  You attach the kite to a belt, for more control, that’s attached to a harness.  Then you need a kind of small surfboard.  It’s much easier to get used to, and you have a much bigger range of motion.

Once you have your equipment, you need a place to practice that has recurring winds.  Then you can surf with the wind at high speeds!  But for beginners, we recommend that you start to learn with an instructor at a certified school.  If you don’t, it can get dangerous!

Kitesurfing has also given rise to other types of sport, based on the kite equipment.  You can see this with some types of snowboarding.  Lots of snowboarders have incorporated the use of a kite, to get even higher speeds over the snow and that way they can do some pretty extreme acrobatics.  The same thing happens with those you use mountain boards.  They use these in the mountains in the summer.  It uses a board a little bit bigger than a skateboard, with rubber wheels, to speed along the rocky paths of the hills.  Kites give them much more speed, and more fun!

To sart:

To begin this sport, the experts recommend that one takes a beginner’s course, where you learn about the equipment and how to handle a high risk sport.  It’s necessary to observe some basic principles of safety, and rescue procedures, so that you can handle yourself should a situation arise, like the equipment breaking, the kite falling, etc.  This sport, in inexperienced hands, can be dangerous, but if you put some time into practicing, it’s a really exciting sport that gives you a huge adrenaline rush.

In a beginner’s course, normally there’s a section about safely, how the wind works, etc., and the other part is hands-on practice.  That starts in the sand with a trainer kite, where you first come into contact with the power of the kite and the different ways the wind hits you, and how to handle the wind speed.  Your instructor will show you how to get the kite up in the air, get it down, and release it.  Then you get into the water and practice the “bodydrag,” getting used to the feel of being in the water without the board first, and this will help you to get on the board should you lose it in the water.  Then you can start practicing a “waterstart” and getting out of the water with the board.

Safety

We don’t recommend practicing kiteboarding with off-shore wind (the wind that moves you away from the beach).  The basic equipment has different safety features.  The kite-bar has a lot of these features.  If there’s too strong of a gust of wind, to the point where you can’t control the kite and it drags you, the part of the harness called the “chickenloop” has a safely ring that releases the kite from your body.  This lets the leash, or security rope, go, so that you wouldn’t release and lose your kite.

There are lines that pass through the bar, giving you some leeway, so that the bar either stays close to your body or farther away, which gives you a light touch with the kite, according to how the wind is blowing (capturing more or less of the wind), which is of course a measure of safety.  You have to be able to regulate the kite when big gusts of wind come up.  Kites with two lines don’t have this system, which is really essential (which is why they’re not used anymore).

And last, there’s how the kite is made, which varies among brands and models, and its design can bring with it many different safety elements.

In this sport, there are always new safety inventions, designs, and performance features, and every year new things are introduced.

Kitesurfing’s beginnings

Even though the practice of this sport is rather recent, it has been known for a long time in China and Indonesia, where they used kites to pull along small boats.  Even knowing that, it wasn’t until 1977 that Gijsbertus Adrianus Panhuise patented a navigation system on a surfboard, for a type of parasailing, becoming the father of kitesurfing.  In Indonesia it’s part of the culture, and an art, the designs are many and varied, and in these places you can find the kiteboarding industry.  It’s also a great place to train, and develop better equipment.  It’s history, together with low overhead and the reputation of the area as the place where kiteboarding was pioneered, has contributed greatly to the great sport of kiteboarding.

Tulum Hotel Playa Azul Tulum by roixes

At Playa Azul Tulum Hotel, we will celebrate Mexico’s Independence Day this coming September 15th with mariachis, live music, DJs, a video projection show, and a piñata!  The party will start at 1 pm and will end after “el grito” at 1 am.  We welcome all of Tulum and the Riviera Maya to enjoy this special day with us, at Playa Azul Tulum Hotel and Beachclub.

Here, we will give a quick explanation of how México won its independence from Spain.

The beginning of the fight for Mexico’s independence in 1810 is celebrated on September 16.  At the beginning, the was led by the priest Miguel Hidalgo and the general Ignacio Allende.  The fight for independence lasted about 11 years, during which many people were at the front of the insurgent army, until 1821 when Mexico was proclaimed an independent country.

This stage began in the decade between 1800 and 1810, when the colonies of new Spain, including the rich, Mexican-born Spaniards, indigenous people and landowners decided that they didn’t want to share the wealth of the new territory with the Spanish, and at the same time, in the new Spain, there was a lot of social inequality.  This was the main pretext for thinking about independence.

In 1808, Napoleon occupied Spain, and so the Spanish were busy defending their country.  The city of Mexico, upon finding out about the French invasion of Spain, used the opportunity to promote the Independence movement, by moving fliers all over the country.

Knowing that the people of Mexico were faithful followers of the Church, Allende proposed that Miguel Hidalgo y Castillo, priest of Dolores, convince the city of the need for Independence; Hidalgo accepted the invitation.

In Dolores, Don Miguel Hidalgo decided to immediately begin the fight.  First they set free those in jail and arrested the Spaniards that they found among the people.  Then, at 5 am on September 16, 1810, they called a mass, the town heeded the call, and with shouts and yells of “Mexicans, Viva Mexico!”, “Long live the Virgin of Guadalupe!”, “Long live Fernando VII!” and “Death to the government of Spain!” Hidalgo incited the town to rise up against the Spaniards.  After this success, those calls became known as “the Grito of Dolores.”
